Chapter 14

After a small break and a glass of water, Daniel felt better. As disturbing as it had been, it was just a nightmare. They were common and bizarre, so even though it was impactful, he could rationalize it fairly quickly and calm down a little. Still, a small part of him felt responsible, but he pushed the feeling aside.

Twenty minutes later, Elizabeth was ready for another round, based on her EEG readings, but Dr. Cowen was nowhere to be seen. Daniel rolled his chair toward the desk, checked on the medical readings, took a deep breath, and started the gas flow.

A couple of minutes later, an image faded in on the DSD.

Daniel put on the headset and spoke slowly and clearly. “Elizabeth, can you hear me?”

She sat in a crowded place, observing people walking by. It seemed to be an airport, with a dark carpet and blue columns and a typical gypsum ceiling. She was constantly rubbing her face and looking around. Daniel’s voice made her stop and fix her gaze on the floor.

“Who are you?”

Elizabeth’s voice sounded distant and tired, but Daniel was glad she was not freaking out.

“My name is Daniel Spence, Elizabeth. You are in the middle of an experiment.”

“An experiment?”

“Yes, you are currently at The Cooper Institute, sleeping, remember?”

“The…Cooper Institute…I see. Yes, that’s true I…remember. Who are you?” Her voice came in a light, high-pitched tone, and that was when Daniel realized it was the voice of a child.

“I’m Daniel Spence, the leading…doctor in the experiment tonight. How are you feeling?”

“Okay, cool. I’m good, I think. This feels weird.”

A childish giggle came through the headset, and Daniel smiled.

“I know, I agree it is weird, but don’t worry. It will be over soon.”

“Okay.”

“Could you please stand up and stretch your hands forward?”

Elizabeth did, and Daniel saw two small hands extending forward.

“Very good! Now I need you to walk forward.”

“Where do you want me to go?”

“Just go forward and we’ll find a door or an entrance we can use.”

Elizabeth walked for a couple of minutes. She went down a long hallway with hardwood floors and random doors on each side. Bells started faintly ringing in the background.

“Daniel?”

“I’m still here, Elizabeth.”

“I’m scared.” Her voice trembled, and Daniel could not avoid feeling guilty.

“Don’t worry, everything is under control. Why don’t we try to walk down to one of the doors?”

“Okay.” She stopped in front of a red door. “Does this one seem okay?”

“That one is perfect, Elizabeth.”

She opened the door and went in. She was in a small wooden church now, walking in the middle aisle between two rows of pews. It was well illuminated by a long skylight that followed the main aisle. The altar was simple, with a red carpet and a wooden cross. The colored-glass windows behind it gave it a mystical appearances, as multiple colors filtered through and illuminated the space. The bells were louder now. The church was full of people, who were sitting down, facing the altar.

“All right, Elizabeth, you are doing amazing. Now walk toward the altar,” Daniel said.
